EPC (Expandable Pattern Casting) are also known as Lost Foam Casting, the process involves attaching expandable polystyrene patterns to an expandable polystyrene gating system and applying a refractory coating to the entire assembly. After the coating has dried, the foam pattern assembly is positioned on several inches of loose dry sand in a vented flask. Additional sand is then added while the flask is vibrated until the pattern assembly is completely embedded in sand.
As a new casting technique, EPC process industrialized in developed countries in the 1980s, and applied by Chinese foundry in the early 1990s. EPC process has unparalleled advantage over conventional casting processes that is valued by experts as “the casting technique for 21 century”, “the green revolution in casting industry”.
Advantages of EPC Casting

Ø Its size and shape are as precise as that in precision casting;
Ø Good smooth-faced;
Ø Closer tolerances and walls as thin as 0.120 inch;
Ø Fewer inner flaws and more compact structure;
Ø Casting cleaning is minimized since there are no parting lines or core fins.
